Switzerland approved its first retail Bitcoin ETF. What changes?

FINMA approved a Swiss retail fund investing directly in Bitcoin. Learn what the approval means, how the fund differs from existing products, and what it does not change.

On October 20, 2026, Switzerland’s financial regulator FINMA announced approval of the country’s first exchange-traded retail fund investing directly in Bitcoin. The decision creates a new Swiss investment-fund route for retail investors. It does not mean the fund was already trading on the approval date, nor does it reduce Bitcoin’s price risk.

What is new—and what already existed?

The word “first” needs context. Switzerland already had Bitcoin-linked exchange-traded products, and FINMA had approved a cryptocurrency fund for qualified investors in 2021. The new milestone is a retail-facing Swiss-law fund that invests directly in Bitcoin. FINMA calls it a Bitcoin ETF in its announcement and classifies it as an “other fund for alternative investments” with specific risk.

Product routeWhat the sources say
Existing Bitcoin-linked ETPsExchange-traded Bitcoin exposure existed before this decision; these products have a different legal structure from a Swiss collective investment fund.
FINMA-approved crypto fund, 2021A fund for qualified investors that primarily invests in a basket of cryptocurrencies.
New retail fundA Swiss-law exchange-traded fund investing directly in Bitcoin; the manager identifies it as Bitcoin Fund ETF (BBIT).

What did FINMA approve?

FINMA approved the fund within a Swiss category for alternative investments with specific risk and granted an exemption from applicable risk-diversification rules. The regulator cited Bitcoin’s long trading history and high trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies. This is a decision about the fund’s regulatory structure, not a finding that Bitcoin is low-risk.

FINMA says supervised institutions must take measures to mitigate operational and custody risks and clearly explain risks in fund documents. It also stresses that Bitcoin investments remain highly risky and can lose a significant amount of value. A fund wrapper changes how an investor can access exposure; it does not remove market volatility.

Can investors buy it now?

The manager, BIT Asset Management, announced the product as Bitcoin Fund ETF (ticker BBIT) and said it expects trading on the SIX Swiss Exchange to begin in November. That is the manager’s expected timing, not a confirmed first trading day. Takeaway: FINMA’s approval adds a new regulated retail fund structure for direct Bitcoin investment in Switzerland. It is distinct from earlier exchange-traded products and from the qualified-investor crypto fund approved in 2021. Approval expands an access route; it does not make Bitcoin less volatile.

Approval announced October 20, 2026. The November trading month is an expectation published by the fund manager; no first trading date is stated here.
